![]() I assumed this was his "scared straight" speech for overweight patients, meant to impress upon me the dangers of my state so I'd forgo the chocolate muffin waiting in my car and drive directly to the gym. ![]() My skin grew hot with shame-which must have been what he intended. It echoed in my head, along with the other words he tossed out: heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and cancer. Then, suddenly, there was my doctor saying this awful word. By the time of my doctor's appointment, I was 35 years old and solidly into size 18s, flirting miserably with the occasional size 20. My cute size 6s morphed into 12s, then 16s, cheap clothes to tide me over until I could fit into my "real" wardrobe. So when my first job offered the perk of a discounted gym membership, I joined and actually got fit, starting with a few aerobics classes a week, moving on to 4- and 5-mile runs and working my way into small sizes I'd once only dreamed of wearing.Īs I rose through the ranks, however, my workweek expanded to 80 hours and I no longer had time for the gym. In college, I battled the same 5 to 20 pounds by law school, the number had risen to 40. Over the years, I'd been more and less overweight. "You need to address the fact that you're obese." I was seeing my doctor for a sinus infection when he informed me, in no uncertain terms, that I had a problem. How could I blame her, when I didn't want to look like me, either? But what had she said that wasn't true? Rena didn't want to look like me. (Was everything about her undersized?) Her words, however innocently intended, had upset me. ![]() I fiddled with Rena's toiletry bag, fingering the neat, miniature bottles. We were what we ate, and she, clearly, had eaten a fit and attractive runner. ![]() She ran marathons I devoured M&M's at my law-firm desk while finishing late-night briefs. Anyone would tell you that Rena and I each deserved our respective states. ![]()
